How many businesses are there in Australia? The ABN numbers, broken down

“How many businesses are there in Australia?” has a headline answer — about 9.0 million active ABNs— and a more useful one. Because an active ABN isn't the same as a trading business, that 9 million narrows quickly once you account for who actually holds those numbers. Here's the breakdown.

9.0 million active ABNs

This is the widest number: every entity with a currently active Australian Business Number. It includes sole traders, trustees, self-managed super funds and holding entities as well as trading companies — so it's the count of registrations, not businesses. Plenty of these never trade. (It's also a snapshot; far more ABNs have been issued over the years and later cancelled.)

~4.75 million non-individual entities

Strip out sole traders and other individuals and you're left with roughly 4.75 million companies, trusts and partnerships — about 53% of active ABNs. The other ~4.26 million are individuals, mostly sole traders. Both are real businesses in a sense, but they behave very differently, which is why our directory focuses on the non-individual set.

~2.48 million registered for GST

Of those entities, about 2.48 millionare currently registered for GST — roughly half. GST registration is broadly required above a turnover threshold, so it's a rough proxy for “actively trading at some scale.” It's a useful filter when you want substance over sheer count.

~1.24 million with a labelled industry

The register doesn't record an industry, so the last cut is ours: about 1.24 million entities — 26% of the non-individual set — carry a labelled ANZSIC division and class with a confidence score. Coverage grows as classification improves; the rest are unlabelled rather than uncategorisable.

Why the funnel matters

The number you want depends on the question. Sizing a total addressable market? Start at 9 million and segment down. Prospecting or KYB on real trading businesses? The GST-registered, industry-labelled slice is far more useful than the headline. The point is that “9 million businesses” and “businesses worth contacting” are very different sets — and you can filter between them.
